kinda of sneaky that manistee acquires a new eye sore that one town wants to get rid of! how many people knew this was coming other then one day before hand or even the day of? how many other boats will be coming to manistee to take up space in the water? was manistee ever a carferry town, or big into the coast guard? carferry should go to ludington and the cg boat to grand haven. whats your opinion??
Hope this helps you and KRB who is apparently geographically impaired. MILWAUKIE is a city in Oregon and never had car ferries. HOWEVER, MILWAUKEE Wisconsin was a ferry town with Ludington as it's MI port-check with the C&O lines for verification-Manitowoc was another port city. As far as the coast guard-there was ALWAYS a coast guard station in Manistee-you would've loved it when the fog horn would blow!! Another fond childhood memory. ANYWAY-if there were an emergency off of Manistee, Grand Haven or Traverse City could be too far away when there is a station about mid way in Manistee.
well what you said is not helping by far, first, THE EYESORES as in the carferry and coast guard boat on manistee lake i suppose could be anywhere, id hate to be the one who owns a condo close to them. what you dont understand, is ludington, with the badger there, should have another on there that people could go thru, and as for the coast guard boat, yes i know we have always had a staion and yes i do still remember the fog horn as i still live here, born and raised. grand haven every yr has a coast guard festival and should have a boat on display all the time, therefor, moving the EYESORES from manistee to elsewhere!! and you mentioned traverse city, just to let you know, it is not on the shores of lake michigan!!

the "City of MILWAUKEE" should go back to Wis. and clutter up their bay, or at least send it back north where it came from. Manistee is becoming a scrap yard, in fact that whole corridor from the State Police post north, should be bull dozed and reclaimed as a park, move the highway inland and leave a pedestrian and bike trail along the water. Manistee Lake could be beautiful if peeps could wake up to see its potential. Put a casino on the East Side so the Indians can make more money.
Hi, I'm new, and from Ludington. As someone stated, take the ferry back to Lud., where they can showcase it. Well. we do have the Badger, and it runs across the lake, for 5 months or so a year now. The other sistership is the City of Midland. She's been wet-docked without usage for well over 20+ years. Cannibalized for parts to keep the Badger running mostly. She has not been open to the public for boarding in any way, shape, or form. Liability issues I expect. But she could be, and should be, as far as most of the locals are concerned. So, having said all that, I truly appreciated the boardings and tours of your SS MIlwaukee several times. It shows even a non-running ship can be fun and educational for the public. And btw, it's a big part of West Michigan history, esp. out of Muskegon and Frankfort, where she sailed many decades ago. To add a USCG cutter retiree, to me, is of historical significance too. Where's your pride in W. Michiganders' nautical history? Your town has alot up on Ludington these days, be proud, you have more potential waiting in the wings than you might appreciate. Add some fresh paint, some elbow grease to the brass, and voixla, a shinig star reinvented. JMO

a ship of historical significance should be in the port it is significant too, neither the City of Mil or the coast guard ship were ever moored here in Manistee. They would both make a good fish and dive reef though
I guess like they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And, one man's trash, is another man's treasure. I like antiques, mostly cars, boats, tractors, planes, motocycles, mini-bikes, guns, radios, mostly vehicles of the past. They may not all be shiny and new, but they had their due place in our history.
I expect they probably set the ship up as a non-profit LLC? If so, they should be able to get grants for historical restoration. Yes, I've been on her about 4 times, everytime in wonder of the mass, the teak and oak, the brass, engine room, pilot house, etc.. There are also some volunteer orgs. that could help I expect. Liability is always a nasty factor though, if someone gets hurt stupidly. Are they giving tours of the cutter too now I wonder?
It was gratifying to see close to 500 people at the RAMSDELL THEATRE for the viewing of "Fitful," the Brauer Productions movie that was almost entirely shot on the City of Milwaukee. This "local" historical attraction may become even more famous. I doubt that "Fitful" will win any academy awards, but it was fun. All the cast and crew were nice people, and I'm sure a lot of local businesses enjoyed the money that was spent in the community. Shown in the picture are Rich Brauer (Producer/Director), Larry Joe Campbell (One of the stars and from Cadillac), Toni Trucks (Who just happened to be at the premier and who starred in a previous Brauer production) and Renee O'Conner (The female lead in the movie).
